San Juan, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC
Today the Darryl Chappell Foundation (Foundation) and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR, or Museum) announced a $20,000 grant from the Foundation to MAPR to fund an Artist Apprenticeship Fellowship Program to support an established artist and mentoring of 40 aspiring artists.
The Fellow will be funded for a one-year period, and the grant is potentially renewable for a second year.
The mission and purpose of the Darryl Chappell Foundation is to foster an appreciation of the fine arts (e.g., painting, drawing, sketching, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and metallurgy) among members of the African Diaspora (i.e., descendants of Sub-Saharan Africa) through grants, as well as to help foster an appreciation of the fine arts within the community.
The grant will support the Fellow’s individual artistic and professional development. Selection criteria include presentation of an artistic portfolio and demonstrated contributions to the development of fine arts in Puerto Rico. As an innovative component of the program, the Fellow will mentor high school and university aspiring art students in underrepresented communities.
The Fellow will be selected by MAPR and will be resident at the Museum. The Foundation will provide an experienced curator, from Uruguay, to provide additional coaching and support.
“We are delighted to make this award to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico,” stated Darryl Chappell, CEO and President of the Foundation. “We are thrilled to be working with the Museum in support of local artists and aspiring artists as we strive to fulfill our mission of enabling aspiring artists to achieve their highest potential.”
“We are very excited to partner with the Darryl Chappell Foundation and receive this funding,” stated Marta Mabel Pérez, Executive Director of the MAPR. “This grant will support the Museum’s efforts in nurturing the development of emerging artistic talent.”
